Learning to swim is a practical life skill, but the first step can feel big for both children and parents.
The right class should meet a child at their current level, build confidence at a steady pace and make progress easy for families to understand.
Splashworld’s Swim School in Tramore teaches children from age three through to advanced stroke development. Classes are organised by ability, not simply by age, so complete beginners, improving swimmers and confident young athletes each have a suitable next step.
When can a child start swimming lessons?
Splashworld’s Ducklings level starts from age three and introduces the pool through fun, play-based activities. It is designed to build water confidence and familiarity with the lesson environment.
Parents or guardians remain in the viewing area while the instructor leads the class.
Children aged four and over can enter the beginner pathway at the level that matches their skills.
For children aged seven and over who are new to swimming, the Late Starters class provides an age-appropriate introduction without placing older beginners in a group that feels too young for them.
Not sure which level to choose? Splashworld instructors can assess your child and place them in the group that best matches their current ability.
How the Splashworld levels work
The lesson pathway moves gradually from comfort in the water to stronger technique and stamina:
- Preschool: Ducklings uses games and guided activities to develop water confidence.
- Beginner: Kiddy Kickers, Turtles and Starfish introduce kicking, floating, push-and-glide skills and the first front crawl and back crawl movements.
- Improver: Goldfish, Dolphins and Silver Fins build distance, breathing, breaststroke, butterfly skills and turns.
- Advanced: Swordfish develops full-stroke technique across front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly.
- ProKids: Coached sets help experienced swimmers refine their technique and build stamina.
Children progress at their own pace. Staying in the same level for more than one term can be completely normal. The goal is confident, safe swimming—not rushing through badges.
What happens during a swimming term?
Standard swimming lessons run in seven-week terms, with small groups of up to eight children.
Most classes are 35 minutes, while preschool, adult and ProKids formats have different session lengths.
The term includes clear milestones. Week 6 is assessment week, when parents can see live progress through the Parent Portal.
The final week includes extra playtime with the slides and wave pool to celebrate the work completed during the term.
What should your child bring?
Pack the following for every lesson:
- Togs and a towel
- A swim cap and goggles
- A swim nappy if required
- A €1 coin for the locker
Arrive around 10 minutes before the lesson. Children shower before entering the pool, and armbands are not required during lessons.
Swim caps and goggles can be purchased at reception if needed.
How parents can support progress
The best support is calm, consistent encouragement. Ask your child what felt easier this week rather than whether they moved up a level.
Regular public swims can also help children become more comfortable in the pool and practise enjoying the water without turning every visit into a test.
Parents can follow instructor feedback and assessment results through the Parent Portal.
If a child appears to be struggling or under-challenged, speak to the instructor or contact the Swim School early in the term so the team can review the placement.
How to apply for a place
- Complete the swimming-lesson application form on the Splashworld swimming lessons page.
- Choose the days that suit your family and provide the swimmer’s current level.
- The team will contact you by email or WhatsApp about availability.
- If your preferred class is full, your child can be added to the waiting list.
- A place is confirmed once payment is completed.
Places are limited, so applying before a new term opens gives the team the best chance of matching your child with a suitable day, time and level.
